Introduction
Beginning in the 1950s, the GDR government used public art as a tool to create a distinct GDR identity through visual culture. There are three main art movements associated with public art in the GDR, East German modernism, socialist realism, and Kunst am Bau.
This exhibit focuses on socialist realism and Kunst am Bau and explains the recurring themes and motifs that distinguish East German public art. In addition, you can understand the legacy of the GDR's public art in unified Germany today.
