This map shows the American, British, French and Soviet occupation zones in Germany after the Nazis' surrender and the Potsdam Conference, but before the formation of the separate nations of East and West Germany. The Soviet occupation zone, the area in pink, became the German Democratic Republic (GDR, DDR, or East Germany) on October 7, 1949. The American, British and French occupation zones combined to form the Federal Republic of Germany (FRG, BRD, or West Germany) on May 23, 1949.
