He Stirred the Sleep of the World
Subject
Er rührte an den Schlaf der Welt (He Stirred the Sleep of the World) in Halle-Neustadt painted by Erich Enge in 1971.
Description
This mural's title refers to a famous GDR song from 1967 by Ernst Busch, which is based on a 1929 poem about Lenin by Johannes Robert Becher. The song celebrates Lenin's contributions to literacy, land reform and electricity as the leader of the Soviet Union. Enge depicted these themes surrounding Lenin's portrait. In the 1990s, the mural's 66 cement plates were dismantled, cleaned and remounted in their original location. It is one of 24 monuments dedicated solely to Lenin that remain in public spaces in the former GDR.
