Title

Academy of Arts Picture Cellar

Subject

The Bilderkeller, murals painted in the basement of Berlin's Academy of Arts (Akademie der Künste) by students Harald Metzkes and Manfred Böttcher, 1957-1958

Description

These murals are only a few that decorate the basement of the Akademie der Künste. All murals predate the Berlin Wall, erected in 1961. They offer insight into the GDR's art school culture before the Wall and the restrictive way of life that came with it. The Bilderkeller was closed to the public for 30 years. It reopened in 2018 and is available to visit and tour. It is the only remaining part of the original building.
